What Is a Dental Emergency?

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat:

Severe toothaches or persistent oral pain

Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth

Knocked-out teeth due to trauma

Lost fillings, crowns, or bridges

Abscesses or oral infections

Soft tissue injuries (lips, tongue, or gums)

If you experience any of these dental emergencies in Chadds Ford, call us immediately at (610) 558-1977 for prompt care.

How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies

While waiting for your emergency dental appointment, follow these first-aid steps to manage pain and prevent further damage:

Toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm water.

Use dental floss to remove any lodged food.

Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.

Take Ibuprofen or Tylenol for temporary pain relief (avoid aspirin directly on gums).

Chipped or Broken Teeth

Save any broken pieces and rinse your mouth with warm water.

If bleeding, apply a gauze pad for 10 minutes.

Use a cold compress to minimize swelling and call our office immediately.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Retrieve the tooth, holding it by the crown (not the root).

Gently rinse it with water (do not scrub or remove tissue fragments).

If possible, reinsert the tooth into its socket without forcing it.

If reinsertion isn’t possible, place the tooth in a cup of milk or saline solution.

See a dentist within 60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Objects Caught Between Teeth

Use dental floss to gently remove the object.

Avoid using sharp objects like pins or toothpicks, which may cause injury.

If the object cannot be removed, call us for an appointment.

Lost Filling

Temporarily fill the cavity with sugar-free gum or over-the-counter dental cement.

Avoid chewing on that side and schedule a dental visit as soon as possible.

Lost Crown or Bridge

If possible, place the crown back over the tooth using dental cement, toothpaste, or denture adhesive.

Avoid using super glue.

Bring the crown with you to your appointment for proper reattachment.

Dental Abscess

A serious infection that needs immediate attention.

Look for swollen gums, pus drainage, or a painful lump.

Rinse with salt water to ease discomfort and call our office right away.

Soft Tissue Injuries (Lips, Gums, Tongue, Cheeks)

Rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution.

Apply gentle pressure with gauze to control bleeding.

Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

If bleeding does not stop after 20 minutes, visit an emergency room.

Canker Sores

Over-the-counter oral pain relievers like Orajel can provide relief.

If sores persist for more than a week, schedule an appointment.
